One of the oldest sceptical explanations involves large pythons. Early collectors of Lukwata traditions themselves suggested that some reports might have originated from encounters with exceptionally large snakes near the shoreline or swimming between islands. Fish are another strong candidate. Lake Victoria contains species capable of reaching impressive sizes, especially Nile perch. Mature Nile perch can grow to lengths that surprise people unfamiliar with them, and a large fish surfacing suddenly beside a canoe can create a dramatic impression. Large catfish may fit some descriptions even better. Catfish possess broad heads, dark colouring and powerful bodies. Softshell turtles are particularly useful as an explanation because they combine traits from different animal groups. A witness might notice:
- A long neck suggestive of a snake.
- A rounded body suggestive of a fish.
- A smooth back rather than obvious scales.

Such features could help explain why Lukwata descriptions often seem contradictory.
There are limits to this theory.
